Renewal blossom
The National Cherry Blossom Festival and Amazon present, “Art in Bloom”! The fesitval seeked local Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV), artists to bring 26 giant cherry blossom sculptures to life!
The sculptures are spread throughout the DMV area to encourage exploring different neighborhoods with a blossom hunt to find all 26 sculptures.
Renewal Blossom by Ameena Fareeda was on display at the Enid A. Haupt Garden in the Smithsonian Gardens located in Washington DC. It is now currently on display in Franklin Park DC.
The Renewal Blossom is inspired by the pattern detailing of traditional Japanese origami paper as well as the Japanese Sakura. The symbolic blossom shape is a strong motif within Japanese culture and tradition. The Sakura signals the upcoming spring season, blooming within a short span of time, it’s a reminder of how short life can be. Origami is traditionally used for celebratory or leisure purposes, yet the intricacies of folding paper can be viewed as a direct reflection of life itself. With the recent challenges the world has endured, the blossom is an indicator of a new and brighter future ahead.
Unshakable friendship campaign
2021 marks the 10th anniversary of The Great East Japan Earthquake, which impacted the country and its people severely with devestating damage and a tragic loss of nearly 20,000 lives.
The blossoms carry a special meaning this year as The Embassy of Japan sponsors Renewal Blossom to celebrate the enduring spirit and friendship between Japan and America.
Renewal Blossom is an ode to traditional floral motifs that symbolize renewal and resilience, which speak to both the fleetingness of time and brighter days to come. The artwork pays homage to our heritage and how we have overcome obstacles, seen significant rebuilding progress, and reemerged with support from our U.S. partners. This bond between Japan and the U.S. continues to thrive, blossoming evermore from mutual appreciation and commitment into a lifelong Unshakable Friendship.
